Frustration is not fun!

As I talked about in a previous post, I recently started a weight lifting program again after almost a year without lifting anything heavier than a pint of beer. I have started and stopped weight lifting programs many times over the years. I just don’t enjoy it as much as running or bicycling plus I hate to be inside when it’s nice and warm outside. But, I know that I need to do weight bearing and resistance training, especially since my main form of exercise, cycling, is non weight bearing. Plus, I’m getting old and weight training is an important part of keeping all those muscles and joints in tip top shape.

So, in the interest of my future well being, I hit the gym a while back and started lifting again. Well, I have had a bit of a rocky start and it is all my fault.

The day after my first workout I had the usual muscle stiffness that comes with any new workout routine. I figured it would go away in a couple of days. It did, except for my right shoulder, which remained sore. It was definitely more than post workout stiffness, more like a strain. As a result I didn’t do any upper body work in order to give the shoulder time to heal. I waited until this week to lift with my shoulder again. It felt perfectly fine after my Thursday workout but when I woke up yesterday it was sore again, just like before. My guess is I strained it again by trying to lift too much too soon.

I’m really kicking myself on this one. I should have known to take it real easy but instead I acted like I was eighteen years old (when everything healed overnight) and lifted too much weight. Once again, my overeager competitive nature got me. The moral of the story is this:

“Don’t push yourself too much, listen to your body and give it time to heal”

This is especially true as we age. We have to realize that we get injured easier and heal slower than when we were in our teens, twenties, or thirties.

Thanks for letting me vent :0)
